It was in the late 1930's that the community of Clover Bend had its new start when 92 home sites were carved out of the large farms that made up the area. As the community grew, so did the school, but in 1983 it had dwindled until only three students graduated. Consolidation was the only option. Plans were started to demolish the school buildings.
Graduates and friends started a movement to keep the community together. A need was seen to preserve not just the school history, but the rich history of all of Clover Bend dating back to the early 1800's. This could be accomplished by forming a Preservation Association, which could preserve the five buildings and attain placement on the State and National Register and hold an annual reunion for all former students and residents and establish a School Museum to preserve the memorabilia of the school and the surrounding communities. This has been an ongoing process, but all of the above have been accomplished.
With Representative Tom Baker and Mr. Don House leading the drive, and with the help of the alumni and friends in Lawrence County, the Clover Bend Historic Preservation Association became a reality. A corporation was formed and a nine member board of directors was elected to serve. The first board members were: Don House, Viola Callahan Meadows, Lance Phillips, Don Tennison, Eddie Gardner, Kenneth Quarry Jr, Viril Ward Pratt, Tom Baker and Billy Ed Doyle. Others who have served: Eugene Brand, Roger Tinsley, Mazie Alls, Bettye Whittaker Claxton, Lavania Spotts Baker, Paul Arnn, Paul King, Dale Phillips, Chester Warnick, J.M. Herriott, Willene Baker Kirkland, Alda Jean Ramsey, Robert Pratt and Robin Whaley.
