Clover Bend National Historic Site

Clover Bend is home to ten structures that represent the history of both the depression era Agricultural Resettlement Program and the history of the Clover Bend School. A caretaker’s cottage is also on site.
Clover Bend was the winter home of late 19th Century writer, Alice French. French used the pen name Octave Thanet, and was known world-wide for her vivid depictions of the citizens of Clover Bend. Memorials to Ms. French at this National Historic Site include the Alice French Bell Pavilion and the Alice French Memorial Garden. The entire National Historic Site is available for walking tours, guided tours by appointment, and rental. Educational programs are also available.
Home Economics Cottage

The Home Economics Cottage is, and has been an important part of the Clover Bend Campus. It has been restored and now hosts meetings, class reunions, crafts classes andsocial gatherings.
The Rock Building
This building is currently being completely refurbished and will house the CBHPA Agriculture museum. The building was formerly a restaurant, canning kitchen, and school lunchroom.
Resettlement Farmhouse
This original, restored and furnished farmhouse depicts life as it was for families living in the Clover Bend Agricultural Resettlement Community. This “New Deal” program converted large plantations into individual farms and former share-croppers became farm owners. The farmstead is complete with barn, smoke-house, hen-house and out-house (barely visible between the hen-house and barn, below).

Gymnasium

“Home of the Eagles”, the exterior of the gym has been completely refurbished, as soon will the interior. Included in the overhaul will be handicap access and restrooms, air conditioning, and refinished floor. The gym will become the activities center of the National Historic Site.
Availability
The gymnasium (when completed), and other buildings at the Clover Bend National Historic Site are available for rent for almost any type event or gathering. Call Rick Sade, Clover Bend Caretaker, at (870) 886-3889 for reservations.
What is Clover Bend?
Clover Bend is a NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE consisting of ten buildings commemorating the existence of a unique community in rural Arkansas. As part of FDR’s “New Deal”, a 5,000 acre cotton plantation was divided into eighty-eight farms, promoting local families’ self sufficiency.
Main School Building (Pictured at the top)
The main building houses an auditorium with a 300 person seating capacity, a kitchen, school library and exhibits of the school’s history.
Agriculture Building
The Agriculture Building houses the Volunteer Fire department.
Mission Statement
Clover Bend Historical Preservation Association is a non-profit educational association which collects, preserves and interprets the history of Clover Bend from 1803 to the present.

Clover Bend is located in Lawrence County in Northeast Arkansas four miles off U. S. Highway 67 on State Highway 228:
From Hoxie: 6 miles south on US Hwy 67, then 4 miles west on AR Hwy 228
From Portia: 8 miles south on Coffman Road/ Lawrence County Road 511
